Bucha is a feature film that tells the true story of Kazakh citizen Kostyantyn Hudauskas who saved over 200 civilians during the Russian occupation of Kyiv, including renowned Ukrainian composer Ihor Poklada and his family. The film showcases the courage and unity of Ukrainians at the beginning of the war.
The film premiered in the main competition of the 40th Warsaw International Film Festival, where it ranked second in audience ratings among 57 films, second only to the Polish film Where Do We Begin by Monika Majorek.
Bucha is a unique project as the producers from the very beginning refused state funding. The film was made through donations and private investments from concerned people from Ukraine, Poland, Canada and the USA.
Leading Ukrainian actors starred in the film, including Vyacheslav Dovzhenko, Artemiy Yegorov, Sergiy Strel'nykov, Oleksandr Pecherytsya, Anastasiya Nesterenko, Nikon Fedotov, Sergiy Smiyan, Tetiana Vashnevskaya, and others. Renowned Polish actor of theatre and cinema Cezary Lukaszewicz played the leading role of Kostyantyn.
The film's director, Stanislav Tiunov, previously produced the romantic comedy What Happened in Vegas; Bucha is his first feature film as a director.
Stanislav says: "The film explores deep philosophical values, emphasizing love and perseverance over fear and aggression."
The film's producer and screenwriter, Oleksandr Shchur, is one of Ukraine's leading screenwriters.
Oleksandr notes: "When I learned about the story of a Lithuanian Jew from Kazakhstan who, instead of leaving, decided to save Ukrainians from occupation, I immediately realized that this was a story that would resonate with audiences anywhere in the world."
