The focus of Soundtrack:Ukraine 2026 – Lviv in the leading role.
A chronicle-documentary film about the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine and Western Belarus in September 1939. The film was created at the behest of the Soviet authorities as an instrument of official propaganda that "sanctified" the entry of the Red Army into these territories following the signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.
Despite its obvious propagandistic nature, "Liberation" is an important testament to the aesthetics and politics of cinema of that era, as well as a significant stage in Dovzhenko's creative biography. Made under the challenging conditions of political pressure, the film demonstrates the director's efforts to preserve visual poeticism even within the framework of official genres. While "Liberation" was rarely analyzed in Soviet film studies and Dovzhenko himself seemingly did not assign significant importance to it, the film deserves reconsideration as part of the artist's controversial legacy.
