When Hungary in the 1990s opened its borders, traveling to France, Italy, or Spain finally became possible, but it was still out of reach for most citizens. Because of this, three young Hungarians, for whom international trips were unaffordable, decided to forge tickets to get to the West. Thanks to their skill and ingenuity, their stunt quickly turned into an underground business, giving a whole generation of Hungarians, thirsty for freedom, a chance to see the world beyond the Iron Curtain. That is, until the authorities and law enforcement became interested in the scheme.
«Blue Pelican» is a humorous yet nostalgic documentary animation visually reminiscent of 1990s MTV cartoons. The director began working on this story back in 2011, and over time his research evolved into an animated project. All the stories mentioned in the film are real. The author spoke with the individuals who came up with the ticket scheme, their clients, and even the detective who participated in the investigation.
