Science fiction is a relatively young genre, characterized by the fictional and improbable events that take place, distinct from real-life situations. The range of themes and storylines within the genre is enormous, including space travel, alien invasions, supernatural abilities, time travel, and technological or natural disasters. Since the breakthrough in special effects technology in the 1990s, science fiction movies have become more convincing in portraying incredible events. This period saw the release of classic films such as "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "The Fifth Element," and "Men in Black," with the first making use of a groundbreaking special effect called "liquid metal." Around the same time, movies featuring the comic book character Batman began to emerge, while the possibility of alien intervention and the infiltration of earthlings by extraterrestrial creatures increasingly fascinated people ("The Faculty," "Species," and of course, "Alien"). But science fiction films need not always revolve around an incredible plot involving extraterrestrial life or monsters. A prime example of this is the film "Groundhog Day." Though labelled as a comedy, it causes the audience to contemplate the purpose and sense of each individual's existence. Heroic acts can be undertaken not just for the good of mankind, the way they are executed in conventional science fiction, but also for personal reasons. For Bill Murray's character in the film, every day ceases to be a "Groundhog Day," as he takes action to change his own life even in seemingly small ways. Thus, contemporary science fiction cinema is not a "pure" genre, but rather a product of various film-making styles. The story itself may be presented as a comedy, tragedy, science fiction or dystopian-contemplative work, and each can be equally impactful.
