Plot

In 1991, members of the Ukrainian diaspora from Canada and America came to their homeland. They promoted ideas of democracy and urged people to vote for Ukrainian independence during the referendum. The film «Distance to Independence» will be based on the memories of these individuals and their personal archives. The unique footage features the first protests against Soviet rule, clashes with law enforcement, exclusive testimonies from participants in these events, and the life of Soviet Ukraine at the time with all its pains, fears, and absurdities. The film explores little-known aspects of events everyone is familiar with: the struggle for Ukraine's independence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and highlights the role played by the Ukrainian community abroad in these processes.
